There are many things a driver must consider and observe both outside and inside the car. When sitting in the driver’s seat for the first time, the candidate driver should pay attention to the correct position they will assume.
In this text, we will specifically focus on the position of the hands on the steering wheel. It is important for the future driver to learn and master the proper hand positioning on the steering wheel from the beginning to avoid future problems. Therefore, it is best to follow the instructor’s exact instructions from the start.
Anyone sitting in the driver’s seat for the first time will instinctively assume some position with their hands on the wheel. There are many variations, influenced by the individual’s perspective. We have highlighted some of the most common mistakes in driving.
- One hand placed at the top or bottom (at 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock) – Many drivers with some experience demonstrate confidence in this manner, but this is not only incorrect but also dangerous. In this position, the driver has no control over the vehicle and can easily lose control.
- Both hands at the top or bottom – Incorrect and unmanoeuvrable. In this position, it is very easy for the hands to slip off the wheel, causing the driver to lose control. The influence on the steering wheel is limited, and turning becomes impossible without creating conditions for an accident.
- Mixing hands on the wheel – It is categorically forbidden to place hands on the inner part of the steering wheel. This results in no control or possibility of handling the vehicle properly.
The above-mentioned hand positioning options, as well as combinations between some of them, should be avoided by the driver.
The accepted and safest position is placing the hands on both sides of the steering wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock. This allows optimal access and control over the entire circumference of the steering wheel. Turning does not require crossing the arms, and both hands have equal support.
A variation of this position behind the wheel is placing the hands at 10 and 2 o'clock, but this is outdated and not particularly recommended anymore. Modern car steering wheels are designed with special extensions for the fingers, and the convenient access to the turn signal and wiper controls is at the horizontal position of 9 and 3 o'clock.
